Nurses

Our practice nurses are fully qualified and registered nurses. The practice nurses run clinics for long-term health conditions such as asthma and diabetes, baby immunisation clinics, and carry out cervical smears.They can also help with health issues such as family planning, healthy living advice, blood pressure checks and dressings.

Emma qualified as a nurse from Bristol UWE in 2005 relocated from her home county Surrey to Gloucestershire earlier in 2019. She is an experienced practice nurse, working in General Practice since 2009. She has special interest in Hypertension management and Diabetes care, along side the usual treatment room responsibilities of wound management, childhood immunisations, travel health, contraception and cervical cytology.

She also gained an extended health module in minor illness and injury management and this has allowed her to gain increased experience and further training in telephone triage.

Emma has recently taken up the role of Practice Nurse Co-ordinator for Stroud and Berkley Vale locality. In this role she will work for GDoc, a company commissioned by Gloucestershire CCG to support nurses working in General Practice. In this role she aims to be an advocate for evidence based care and improve nurse access to education. This in turn will strive to improve patient choice and experience while ensuring patient care is safe and effective in General Practice across the county.

Healthcare Assistants

The Healthcare Assistants support the practice nurses with their daily work and carries out a variety of tasks. They take blood samples, blood pressure, height and weight measurements. They also do dressings, ECGs, and NHS health checks. They may act as a chaperone when a patient or doctor requests, and assists the doctors during procedures such as minor surgery and contraceptive coil fitting.

Health Visitors

A health visitor is a registered nurse who has received training particularly related to babies, children and pregnant women. The health visitor’s role is to provide families with children under five years old with support and advice around the general aspects of mental, physical and social wellbeing. The team is based at Stroud Maternity Hospital and can be contacted on 0300 421 8967.
